Day 1 - Narvik

Narvik, Norway: Located 68 degrees North, Narvik lies 140 miles inside the Arctic Circle. Its settlement history began in the Stone Age, and Vikings are known to have lived in the area. The modern town came into existence in the 1870s to support the iron industry. Iron ore mined in neighbouring Sweden makes Narvik an ideal ice-free port for exports. The LKAB mining corporation remains a major employer and landowner, shipping a staggering 25,000,000 tons of iron ore annually. Narvik’s industrial heritage shapes its character and is reflected in its tourist attractions. In 1883, a British-Swedish company built a railway connecting the Swedish iron mines in Kiruna to Narvik. Unfortunately, much of Narvik was destroyed in World War II. Invaded by the Nazis on 9 April 1940, it was briefly recaptured by the Allies before falling under German occupation again. The local war museum documents this turbulent history.

After a devastating 1904 fire, foreign architects rebuilt the town, creating its unique Jugendstil buildings adorned with artistic turrets and curlicues. A historic settlement with vibrant waterfront architecture, it is home to the renowned Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
