From Dakar to Casablanca: A Cultural Odyssey with Swan Hellenic

Swan Hellenic's seven-night 'Cruise from Senegal to Morocco' aboard SH Diana takes travellers on an insightful journey from the bustling streets of Dakar to the vibrant maritime hub of Casablanca. Starting in Dakar, Senegal, passengers encounter the electrifying energy and French colonial history of one of West Africa's most modern cities. The expedition then sails along the West African coast, stopping in Mauritania and Spain's Lanzarote, where guests can savour unique landscapes and traditional dishes, such as 'papas arrugadas.' As the journey approaches the Moroccan coast, Agadir and Safi offer glimpses into Morocco's rich history, from the Atlas Mountains to bustling fishing ports. The journey concludes in Casablanca, where European, African, and Arabian cultures blend seamlessly in the city's architecture and lively markets.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Dakar

Dakar, Senegal: Situated at the tip of the Cape Vert peninsula, Dakar is West Africa's westernmost point and the capital of French-speaking Senegal. Founded in 1857, it is the region's oldest European city and among the most westernised. The opening of the Dakar-St Louis railway in 1885 marked its rise, later becoming a French naval base and by 1904, the capital of Afrique Occidentale Française. The city's downtown Plateau area reflects its colonial past with architecture reminiscent of southern France. A modern metropolis pulsating with life, Dakar invites you to sip popular mint tea and navigate the vivid craft markets, bartering for traditional embroidery, woodcarvings, metalwork, and costume jewellery.

Day 2 - Nouakchott

Nouakchott, Mauritania: Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, is a vibrant city where desert meets the sea. A relatively young capital established in 1960, it reflects a mix of Mauritanian traditions and modern influences. Visitors can explore bustling markets where local crafts and fresh seafood abound, see the impressive Grand Mosque, and walk along the expansive beaches of this emerging Saharan city.

Day 3 - Nouadhibou

Nouadhibou, Mauritania: Located on the coast of Mauritania, Nouadhibou serves as a strategic fishing and commercial hub. Known for its vast bay dotted with shipwrecks, the city offers a fascinating glimpse into maritime heritage. Beyond the vibrant markets and delectable seafood, excursions might take you to the awe-inspiring Cape Blanc or explore the longest freight train in the world as it traverses desolate desert landscapes.

Day 4 - At Sea

Spend a tranquil day at sea as we journey towards the Canary Islands. Relax and enjoy the onboard amenities, or attend one of the insightful lectures that deepen your understanding of the diverse cultures and histories encountered on your expedition.

Day 5 - Arrecife

Arrecife, Lanzarote, Spain: Lanzarote, a volcanic island with UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status, boasts dramatic landscapes shaped by its explosive past. Its pleasant beaches and scant rain, coupled with duty-free shopping, make Arrecife a coveted destination. The capital is an inviting town with a modern waterfront and vivid gardens. Discover the dazzling salt flats of Janubio, the rugged Fire Mountain terrain, the eerie Los Verdes caves, or quaint fishing villages around the coast. Indulge in local cuisine, featuring options like garbanzos compuestos, papas arrugadas, and fresh seafood. Please note, those taking shore excursions may need to dine early on the ship to accommodate excursion schedules.

Day 6 - Agadir

Agadir, Morocco: Encircled by the Atlas Mountains and bordered by a splendid crescent-shaped beach, Agadir is a city of intriguing contrasts. While its early history remains blurred, the Portuguese built a fortress here in the late 15th century. The city was liberated by the Saadians in 1540 and thrived as a port, gaining attention in 1911 when a German gunboat protested North African territorial divisions. After Morocco's independence in 1956, an earthquake in 1960 devastated Agadir. Today, it has been rebuilt, blending modernity with tradition, offering beautiful sandy beaches, luxurious hotels, and a wide variety of cafés and restaurants. Remember, vendors in the souks can be very enthusiastic.

Day 7 - Safi

Safi, Morocco: Nestled on the Atlantic, Safi's harbour has drawn traders since Roman and Phoenician times. By the 11th century, it was a vital hub for gold, slaves, and ivory trade with Marrakesh and Guinea. The Portuguese influence remains, with a fortress still guarding this ancient city. Fishing and the thriving sardine industry dominate today's economy, along with exports of phosphates, textiles, and ceramics. Lying in the shadow of the Atlas Mountains, Safi shares its historical legacy with the surrounding scenic landscapes.

Day 8 - Casablanca

Casablanca, Morocco: Born from an ancient Berber settlement, Casablanca—once Anfa, ravished and rebuilt by the Portuguese as Casa Branca—evolved into Morocco's largest city. Linked to commerce and industry, it stands as a vibrant confluence of European, African, and Arabian cultures. From Mohammed ben Abdallah's architectural legacy to its colourful marketplaces, the city melds history with modern elegance. Vendors in the souks, as in Agadir, might be keen to offer their goods, adding to the lively atmosphere of this endlessly fascinating port of call.
