Itinerary

Day 1 - Ushuaia

Ushuaia, Argentina: At 55 degrees latitude south, Ushuaia (pronounced oo-swy-ah) is closer to the South Pole than to Argentina's northern border with Bolivia. It serves as the capital and tourism hub for Tierra del Fuego, the island province at the southernmost tip of Argentina. Despite its striking natural beauty, Tierra del Fuego's history is more mythical than rugged. In 1902, Argentina initiated a penal colony in Ushuaia to bolster its territorial claim over Patagonia. The city, once home to 3,000 people, mainly former inmates and prison staff when the prison closed in 1947, now boasts a population of 60,000, largely driven by tourism. Ushuaia promotes itself as the world's southernmost city, and visitors are invited to obtain a special passport stamp to commemorate their trip. The region draws over 120,000 visitors during the summer months, with events like the Marathon at the End of the World extending the tourist season. Offering adventure activities such as trekking, fishing, horseback riding, wildlife spotting, and sailing, especially in Tierra del Fuego National Park, Ushuaia is a captivating destination.

Day 3 - Falkland Islands

Stanley, Falkland Islands (Malvinas): The Falkland Islands, a remote South Atlantic archipelago, boasts an abundance of wildlife and rugged natural beauty. The islands are home to a variety of bird species, including several types of penguins, and provide a haven for elephant seals and sea lions along their shores. Visitors to the capital, Stanley, can experience the island's unique blend of British and South American influences, explore historical sites related to the 1982 conflict, and enjoy the pristine scenery that this isolated gem offers.

Day 6 - South Georgia Island

South Georgia Island, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands: South Georgia is a breathtaking destination featuring towering snow-capped mountains, mighty glaciers, and grasslands teeming with wildlife. Southern fur seals, Southern elephant seals, and a stunning variety of albatross species, including the magnificent Wandering Albatross, call this island home. Thousands of King and Macaroni Penguins also inhabit these shores. The island's rich history is linked to early Antarctic explorers like Captain James Cook and Ernest Shackleton, whose grave and the whaling museum at Grytviken are notable attractions. Additionally, visitors have the chance to see the impressive King Penguin colonies at Salisbury Plain or Gold Harbour.

Day 10 - South Shetland Islands

South Shetland Islands, Antarctica: Approximately 770 kilometers south of Cape Horn, the South Shetland Islands are often the first Antarctic land sighted by expeditioners. The islands, separated from the Antarctic Peninsula by the Bransfield Strait, were the initial focus for sealing ventures in the early 19th century, and remain popular with visitors today. Penguins such as the Chinstrap, Adelie, Gentoo, and Macaroni breed here, while the warmer climate of the islands supports moss beds and unique lichens, alongside hair grass and pearlwort. Wildlife spotting includes Leopard seals, Weddell seals, Crabeater seals, Southern elephant seals, and Antarctic fur seals both in the water and along the beaches.

Day 19 - At Sea

Transitioning Across the South Atlantic: Spend a day at sea traversing the majestic South Atlantic, giving time to reflect on the awe-inspiring landscapes seen and prepare for further adventures. This period allows you to engage in on-board activities, enjoy lectures and storytelling sessions about Antarctic expeditions, and immerse in the tranquil expanse of the ocean.

Day 21 - Ushuaia

Ushuaia, Argentina: Once again back at 55 degrees latitude south, Ushuaia serves as the conclusion to this remarkable expedition holiday. Known as the gateway to Antarctica, Ushuaia invites travellers to explore its adventurous offerings once more. Engage in trekking, fishing, wildlife trekking, and horseback riding as you savour the captivating end of your journey amidst the dramatic landscapes of Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego.
