Expedition to New Zealand’s Subantarctic Islands

Ponant's 15-day expedition aboard Le Soléal invites explorers to discover the unique and pristine beauty of New Zealand’s Fiordlands and Subantarctic Islands. Departing from the vibrant city of Dunedin, known for its rich Scottish heritage and dynamic university atmosphere, participants embark on a captivating journey through awe-inspiring landscapes and diverse ecosystems. The voyage begins at Ulva Island, a renowned nature sanctuary home to some of the world’s rarest bird species, guided by Ponant’s knowledgeable team of naturalists.

As the expedition progresses, explorers are taken through the stunning Fiordland National Park, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, showcasing the majestic Dusky, Doubtful, and Milford Sounds. These areas offer remarkable opportunities to observe Fiordland crested penguins and immerse in the dramatic scenery. The journey continues to the remote Snares Islands, and later to Enderby Island and Macquarie Island, the latter a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its extraordinary geological formations and vibrant penguin colonies. Ponant ensures a transformative experience punctuated by Zodiac cruises and insightful guidance, providing access to some of the planet's most untouched regions. Itinerary

Day 1 - Dunedin

Dunedin, New Zealand: Clinging to the walls of the natural amphitheatre at the west end of Otago Harbour, the South Island's second-largest city boasts inspiring nearby seascapes and abundant wildlife. As a vibrant university town, Dunedin exudes a vitality far greater than its population of 122,000 might suggest, enriched by its manageable size which makes it a delightful city to explore on foot. Unless, of course, you decide to tackle Baldwin Street, home to the world's steepest residential street and its exhilarating races, both human and candy. Established in 1848 by Scottish settlers of the Free Church of Scotland, the city’s Scottish roots are evident today in its whisky distillery, the statue of Scottish poet Robert Burns, and the ubiquitous kilts. The past blends with the present seamlessly as bohemian flair weaves through its fabric. Dunedin also acts as a magnet for writers, musicians, and artists, giving birth to the famous "Dunedin Sound" of the 1970s and '80s.

Day 2 - Ulva Island

Ulva Island, New Zealand: Ulva Island offers an enchanting glimpse of New Zealand's pristine environment, featuring vibrant ecosystems teeming with rare and endangered bird species in a predator-free sanctuary. Walk through lush native bush and experience the rich biodiversity firsthand in this haven for ecology enthusiasts.

Day 3 - Dusky Sound

Dusky Sound, New Zealand: Despite being discovered by Cook over 240 years ago, Dusky Sound remains one of Earth's untouched gems. Nestled in the southwest corner of Fiordland National Park, many liken this “titanic mason” to a perfect sculpture, with sheer cliffs rising dramatically from the ocean. The sound is both an ornithological sanctuary, notably for the Fiordland Penguins, and a wildlife spectacle with its unique marine environment created by the merger of fresh and saltwater.

Day 3 - Doubtful Sound

Doubtful Sound, New Zealand: Doubtful Sound is significantly larger than its neighbour Milford Sound, offering expansive vistas of sheer cliffs and cascading waterfalls echoing through untouched wilderness. Its calm waters mirror the towering landscapes, providing stunning photographic opportunities and a serene, awe-inspiring experience.

Day 4 - Milford Sound

Milford Sound, New Zealand: Renowned for its spectacular natural beauty, Milford Sound is an emblem of New Zealand’s stunning fiord landscapes featuring steep granite peaks. Dominated by the iconic Mitre Peak, the sound’s mirrored waters and plunging waterfalls create an idyllic setting amidst an unspoiled wilderness you’ll cherish as you cruise through.

Day 5 - Snares Islands

Snares Islands, New Zealand: As the northernmost of New Zealand’s subantarctic islands, The Snares are untouched by human habitation and introduced mammals. The islands, brimming with indigenous sea mammals, birds, and flora, are rightly designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 6 - Enderby Island

Enderby Island, New Zealand: Home to vibrant flora and unique fauna, Enderby Island offers habitats for rare wildlife such as the yellow-eyed penguin and New Zealand sea lions. Wander along the Northern Cliffs Track and rejoice in the sight of these fascinating creatures alongside exquisite natural sceneries.

Day 6 - Musgrave Inlet

Musgrave Inlet, Auckland Islands, New Zealand: This secluded bay offers rich opportunities to observe rare birds and subantarctic wildlife, including intriguing caves to explore aboard Zodiac® inflatables. The lush, abundant flora of the Auckland Islands provides an enchanting backdrop as you immerse yourself in the island’s unique offerings.

Day 8 - Macquarie Island

Macquarie Island, Tasmania, Australia: Macquarie Island is lauded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its geological significance. Unique for its oceanic crust composition, the island is a thriving ecosystem home to vast penguin rookeries and Southern Elephant Seals. Zodiac® excursions can offer closer encounters with the island's remarkable wildlife if conditions allow.

Day 9 - Macquarie Island

Macquarie Island, Tasmania, Australia: Continue exploring Macquarie Island’s wonders with its unparalleled geological features and dense wildlife, making it a captivating destination for naturalists and adventurers alike. The island's majestic landscape and rich biodiversity ensure a rare and unforgettable experience.

Day 11 - Campbell Island

Campbell Island, New Zealand: A lush ecological paradise, Campbell Island features stunning megaherbs, wildflowers, and critically endangered birds, including the Campbell Island teal. A guided walk or a Zodiac® tour around Perseverance Harbour showcases the island’s rich natural tapestry.

Day 13 - Antipodes Islands

Antipodes Islands, New Zealand: Isolated yet intriguing, the Antipodes Islands offer the chance to witness an ecosystem brimming with diverse wildlife and plant species. This remote sanctuary holds an abundance of seabirds, providing rare observation opportunities amidst breath-taking landscapes.

Day 15 - Dunedin

Dunedin, New Zealand: As your journey concludes in Dunedin, retrace the vibrant cultural history and natural splendour of this dynamic city. With a myriad of university-town vibrancy and bohemian flair, Dunedin encapsulates the spirit of its diverse heritage perfectly, offering a harmonious blend of cultural and natural exploration as the expedition holida ends.
