Journey Through Time: Greenland to Newfoundland with Quark Expeditions

Quark Expeditions offers an incredible 13-night journey aboard the Ocean Explorer, embarking from Reykjavík, Iceland on 01 Jan 2022 00:00, and concluding in Saint-John's, Newfoundland and Labrador on 14 Jan 2022 00:00. This expedition weaves a narrative of natural beauty, history, and wildlife as it traverses from the rugged Arctic landscapes of Greenland to the historically rich coasts of Newfoundland. Starting in Reykjavík, travellers admire the colourful panorama created by vibrant rooftops against the backdrop of Mt. Esja. As the cruise progresses, the expedition reaches the heart of Greenland in Kangerlussuaq, known for its stunning 'Big Fjord' and rich Arctic fauna, followed by a visit to Sisimiut, a place where the traditional practice of dog sledding meets modern exploration.

Continuing through the icy realms, adventurers explore Ilulissat, famed for its colossal icebergs and serene atmosphere, before arriving in Canada. The route includes the striking Torngat Mountains National Park, offering glimpses of polar bears and caribou against dramatic mountainous vistas. The history of L’Anse Aux Meadows awaits, an archaeological treasure heralding Viking exploration where Norse settlers once took root. Concluding in the bustling yet serene atmosphere of Saint-John's, participants are invited to reflect on the confluence of historic and natural wonders experienced throughout this expedition.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Reykjavík

Reykjavík, Iceland: Sprawling Reykjavík, Iceland's vibrant nerve centre and seat of government, houses half of the island's population. Nestled by a bay with Mt. Esja standing watch, Reykjavík boasts colourful concrete houses topped with strikingly painted roofs. While the countryside largely lacks trees, the city is rich in birches, rowans, and willows, as well as imported conifers. The city name comes from 'reykur' (smoke) and 'vík' (bay), inspired by the Norseman Ingólfur Arnarson who landed here in AD 874. Most homes today are heated by geothermal hot springs, hence reducing pollution. A City Card offers convenient transport and museum access.

Day 2 - Kangerlussuaq Havn

Kangerlussuaq Havn, Greenland: Kangerlussuaq, meaning "Big Fjord" in the local tongue, is a quaint settlement of 500 on Greenland's western shore. Notable for Greenland's primary airport, the settlement thrives on air transport and tourism. Its surrounding tundra is home to Arctic muskoxen, caribou, and gyrfalcons.

Day 3 - Sisimiut (Holsteinsborg)

Sisimiut (Holsteinsborg), Greenland: Just north of the Arctic Circle, Sisimiut is Greenland's northernmost port that stays ice-free in winter. Yet, the town retains traditional dog sled travel during snowy months. As Greenland's rapidly growing business centre, Sisimiut combines a rich 4,500-year history with a robust fishing industry.

Day 4 - Ilulissat (Jakobshavn)

Ilulissat (Jakobshavn), Greenland: Known as the 'birthplace of icebergs,' the Ilulissat Icefjord produces tremendous volumes of ice daily. The third-largest town in Greenland, its cool climate is offset by serene weather. Renowned for its local history museum dedicated to Knud Rasmussen, it almost has as many sled dogs as residents.
