Itinerary

Day 1 - Reykjavík

Reykjavík, Iceland: Sprawling Reykjavík, the nation's nerve centre and government seat, is home to half the island's population. Overlooked by the imposing Mt. Esja, Reykjavík presents a colourful sight with its concrete houses painted in light hues and topped with vibrant red, blue, and green roofs. Unlike the almost treeless countryside, the city is brimming with tall, native birches, rowans, and willows, as well as imported species like aspen, pines, and spruces. The name Reykjavík originates from the Icelandic words for smoke, 'reykur', and bay, 'vík'. In AD 874, the Norseman Ingólfur Arnarson came ashore at the bay, shrouded in steam plumes from nearby hot springs. Today, most houses are heated by near-boiling spring water, which eliminates air pollution and avoids smoke. Interestingly, the hot water may bring a slight sulphuric bathroom aroma. Prices align with other major European cities, and a practical option is purchasing a Reykjavík City Card for unlimited bus use and admission to any of the city's seven pools, the Family Park and Zoo, and museums. These cards pay for themselves after three or four daily uses.

Day 2 - Heimaey Island

Heimaey Island, Iceland: Heimaey, with its enchanting streets lined with white wooden houses, was once torn apart by a volcanic eruption over 40 years ago. The picturesque island continues to captivate visitors, standing as a testament to the resilience and determination of its inhabitants. Despite nearly being cut off by lava from the Eldfell volcano, the harbour was saved by plucky locals who pumped gallons of seawater onto the advancing lava. This act preserved the crucial fishing industry. The towering castles of volcanic rock are among Iceland's most dramatic and scenic features.

Day 3 - Grundarfjørdur

Grundarfjørdur, Iceland: Nestled on the north coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Grundarfjørdur, with its backdrop of majestic mountains and iconic Kirkjufell, is famous for its beautiful landscapes. This charming town offers opportunities to explore the surrounding nature trails and boasts rich marine life, including opportunities for whale watching. Local activities include visiting nearby waterfalls, enjoying the verdant countryside and capturing idyllic views for photography enthusiasts.

Day 4 - Hafnarfjörður

Hafnarfjörður, Iceland: Known for its unique blend of tradition and modernity, Hafnarfjörður is built on lava fields and famous for its annual Viking festival. This lively port town provides a vibrant arts scene, geothermal pools, and intriguing folklore about elves and hidden beings. Visitors can immerse themselves in the culture and history at local museums or enjoy the bustling harbour full of shops and eateries.

Day 5 - Húsavík

Húsavík, Iceland: Sitting below Húsavíkurfjall mountain on Skjálfandi bay's eastern shore, Húsavík boasts stunning landscapes that enhance its reputation as Iceland's whale-watching capital. Since 1995, Húsavík has emerged as a premier location for seeing these magnificent creatures. The town's harbour retains its charm and serves as a focal point for marine activities. Also worth visiting is the waterfront whale museum, which provides further insights into Húsavík's maritime heritage.

Day 6 - Ísafjörður

Ísafjörður, Iceland: Framed by two colossal rock terraces against a backdrop of black fjord waters, Ísafjörður is a vibrant, modern place treasured for its lively selection of cafes and eateries. As a gateway to Iceland's unspoiled wilderness, it offers exhilarating pursuits like skiing, hiking, and watersports. The town serves as an ideal base for adventurers eager to explore the dramatic and stunning landscapes of the Westfjords.

Day 7 - Reykjavík

Reykjavík, Iceland: Returning to Reykjavík, visitors can continue to enjoy Iceland's governmental and cultural heart. With an extraordinary assortment of galleries, museums, and vibrant nightlife, the city satisfies all tastes. Discover geothermal wonders, captivating architecture, and the city’s commitment to sustainable living, visible in its environmentally friendly geothermal heating systems. Whether it's exploring historic buildings or relaxing in one of Reykjavík's many hot pools, there's ample opportunity for enjoyment.
