Day 1 - Ushuaia

Ushuaia, Argentina: At 55 degrees latitude south, Ushuaia (pronounced oo-swy-ah) is closer to the South Pole than to Argentina's northern border with Bolivia. It is the capital and tourism base for Tierra del Fuego, the island at the southernmost tip of Argentina. Despite its stark physical beauty, the island's historical allure is rooted more in its mythical past than the rugged reality. Inhabited for 6,000 years by Yámana, Haush, Selk'nam, and Alakaluf Indians, 1902 saw Argentina eager to populate Patagonia with the initiation of an Ushuaian penal colony. This established the permanent settlement of its most southern territories and everything in between. After the prison closed in 1947, the population of Ushuaia had risen to about 3,000, composed mainly of former inmates and prison staff. Today, with 60,000 residents, Ushuaia burgeons with tourism, hailed as the southernmost city in the world. Thriving on this frontier allure, it feels like a frontier boomtown, a reminder of its origins as a rugged, weather-beaten fishing village.

Historically important as the site of the first British settlement in the Falklands, it is now a sheep farm. The island boasts a highly diverse wildlife, with Gentoo and King Penguins visible in the open dune and sand-flat areas, while Rockhopper Penguins along with the odd pair of Macaroni Penguins frequent Mount Richards, the highest point at 457 metres. Other avian residents include the Black-throated Finch, Ruddy-headed Goose, and Falkland Steamer Duck.
