Arctic Wonders: Svalbard to Greenland Expedition

Ponant offers a remarkable 16-night expedition aboard Le Commandant Charcot, venturing from Longyearbyen in Svalbard to Reykjavík, Iceland. This daring journey through the Arctic reveals the untouched beauty of the south of Svalbard and north-east Greenland, regions traditionally inaccessible in early summer. Sailing through the Søraust-Svalbard Nature Reserve, renowned as an Important Bird Area, and the majestic Nordaustlandet, adventurers will witness Europe's largest ice cap and traverse the icy Hinlopen Strait. As they progress, the dynamic landscape of Greenland's captivating fjords—home to diverse wildlife such as muskox and Arctic fox—unfolds.

In the heart of the Arctic, explorers traverse the east coast of Greenland, where towering peaks and drifting icebergs form an awe-inspiring backdrop against which the legacy of famous explorers like Jean-Baptiste Charcot resonates. The expedition concludes in vibrant Reykjavík, a city rich with culture and history situated against the breathtaking Icelandic panoramas. Throughout this voyage, participants will have the privilege to observe flora and fauna, explore remote Inuit communities, and, depending on weather and ice conditions, embark on safe excursions. This expedition promises to be a unique blend of adventure and discovery, guided by the harmonies of nature and history.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Longyearbyen

Longyearbyen, Svalbard and Jan Mayen: Longyearbyen is the largest settlement in Svalbard, serving as the seat of Norwegian administration. It offers the best services and infrastructure in the archipelago. Nestled deep in the Adventfjord, a sidearm of the Isfjorden, Longyearbyen’s airport operates year-round. However, its harbour is icebound in winter. The main facilities, including shops, hotels, restaurants, and a hospital, are conveniently clustered near the port. The UNIS Centre, an eminent educational institution in town, provides the northernmost higher education with a collaborative effort from several Norwegian universities. Adjacent to this, the Svalbard Museum offers insights into the region's natural history and exploitation. Remnants of the area’s mining past can still be seen scattered throughout Longyearbyen.

Day 2 - Spitsbergen

Spitsbergen, Svalbard and Jan Mayen: Explore the stark beauty of Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago. Witness the untouched wilderness, where rugged mountains and vast glaciers dominate the landscape. The island's remote location and unique climate make it a haven for Arctic wildlife, including polar bears, reindeer, and a wide variety of seabirds.

Day 3 - Soraust-Svalbard Nature Reserve

Soraust-Svalbard Nature Reserve, Svalbard and Jan Mayen: The nature reserve is an area of pristine wilderness offering stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife. This remote location in Svalbard is known for its expansive ice fields and dramatic mountain ranges.
