Colón, Panama: The provincial capital of Colón is located beside the canal's Atlantic entrance. The city bears the Spanish-language surname of Christopher Columbus, while the Americans in the 19th century referred to it as Aspinwall, named after a railway engineer. Founded in 1850 by Americans working on the Panama railroad, Colón rose in significance following the railway's completion in 1855 and the subsequent canal plans. Despite a devastating fire in 1885 during the French canal endeavour that left many homeless, Colón was rebuilt in a style influenced by France, with surviving architectural relics from that era and the early 20th century still standing, albeit in a state of decline.
